Pediatric Dentistry

What is Pediatric Dentistry?

Pediatric dentistry is a dental specialty that focuses on serving patients from birth to adolescence. Unlike other areas that focus on specific pathologies, such as orthodontics or periodontics, pediatric dentistry specializes in providing a comprehensive treatment to the patient, with which an emotional bond is created from the early stages of their life.

The main axis of treatment provided by a pediatric dentist is preventive management, with the aim of ensuring that the child develops healthy lifestyle habits such as self-care of their oral health and a balanced diet, as well as a positive attitude towards treatment and professional controls. This specialty attends to the baby from birth; it then treats and controls them during breastfeeding, childhood, and early adolescence. It is also important to emphasize that the family actively participates in this process, so its work begins with the mother’s orientation during pregnancy, in order to prepare her for the care of her baby’s oral health, and later by involving the rest of the family in the development of a healthy upbringing.

When should I take my baby to the dentist for the first time?

It is currently recommended to have the first visit when the baby is 1 or 2 months old due to many issues related to the first teething that can occur at early ages, such as breastfeeding problems from a short lingual frenulum, absence of teeth, growth alterations, supernumerary teeth, among others. It is also important to check for possible pathologies related to teething changes. Finally, regular visits to the pediatric dentist allow for the effective development of an important educational function regarding oral hygiene.
